Back pain can be associated with a range of medical conditions, according to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke. Infections and problems such as osteoporosis, bulging discs, stenosis, or spondylitis can cause back pain, as well as disc degeneration and repetitive use injuries. Nerve and muscle problems like sciatica, sprains, strains, or fibromyalgia may also be the culprit.
No matter what the cause, both lower and upper back pain can be exacerbated by sleeping or sitting for hours on a surface that allows the spine to curve, sag, or otherwise become "trained" into a shape that does not support the natural alignment of the human body. A misaligned spine, over the course of eight hours in a desk chair or in your own bed, can increase pain and contribute to long-term degenerative conditions. If you work outdoors, the risks become higher for pulls, sprains, and strains related to lifting, falls, or other accidents.
A study in the American Journal of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, published in 2006, found a significant correlation between low back pain and poor sleep. Another Applied Ergonomics article, published in the same year, found that pressure points and/or spinal distortion during sleep resulted in higher levels of back pain.
Low levels of pain can lead to increasing tension and stress in your relationships and activities. More acute ache or pain can impact your ability to do the things you love to do -- even, eventually, affecting whether you can get out of bed or out the door. Some back problems stemming from conditions like sciatica or fibromyalgia can be difficult to treat; some in the traditional medical community may even still make you feel as if they believe your pain is "all in your head". In these cases, finding the treatment that works becomes central to living a healthy, fulfilling life.
